Making Czech Hedgehogs

An easy way to mass produce these common beach obstacles using plastic 'angle iron' and plastic card. Materials are readily available from your local model shop and the total cost of each hedgehog works out to be less than 20p (excluding paint).

Stage1

Cut the number of lengths of angle iron required from the length of 3 mm plastic 'angle iron'. Each is 1.25" (31 mm) long and you will need 3 lengths for each hedgehog.

Stage 2

Cut quarter inch (6 mm) squares of plastic card from a thin (10 thou) sheet of plastic card. These will be used to make the metal flanges than hold the lengths of 'angle iron' together.

Cut away a quarter from two squares and cut a third into two (diagonally). These these components will then be stuck to one length of 'angle iron' to make a bracket to secure the other two lengths.

Stage 3

Glue one of the modified squares to the flat side of a length of angle iron (as per the photo). The right angle of the flange is at the mid point of the length of 'angle iron'.

Leave to dry for a few minutes and then glue on the other two bits of flanges to make a three way bracket.

Stage 4

After the bracket has dried glue the two remaining lengths of 'angle iron' in place.

Two photos of the mass production process.
Notches then cut into the 'angle iron'.
Painting. First spray with matt black car paint
Second a light spray of car red primer.
A final dry brush with matt orange (I used Humbrol enamel) and the obstacle is ready for incorporating into the Atlantic Wall.
